What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation procedures often use bone grafts and other firm tissue substitutes that are implanted on the bone of the chin to create the desired look. This procedure is extensive, allowing for sculpting of the chin from the bone outwards and a complete change in appearance.

For those who seek a less invasive procedure, chin augmentations can also be achieved with fat injections using harvested fat from the patient, which has been processed and turned into the perfect biocompatible injectable. The fat substances are easily harvested from areas of the patient’s body with excess fat, then injected with micro-needles into the areas of the chin that need filling out and shaping.

The shape of the chin and jawline can also be refined and shaped using familiar fillers, such as Voluma®, Restylane®, Perlane®, Hylaform®, Sculptura®, or Radiesse®. Again, these fillers are injected using tiny needles under a simple local anesthetic, have little or no downtime, and may be combined with other facial procedures for an overall appearance that fits the patient’s ideal.

Benefits of Chin Implants

Chin implants, also called chin augmentation, strengthens weak facial structure by creating a stronger looking jaw line. They also provide other benefits including:

  • Balanced appearance
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Strong side profile

Is Chin Augmentation Right for Me?

If you have a weak chin, recessive jawline, or under projected chin, which causes your face to lack contour and balance, chin augmentation may be right for you.

Older patients who have experienced facial fat loss, and who wish to look more youthful but are not yet prepared for a facelift, may find a chin augmentation procedure adds definition and youthfulness to their lower face.

How Involved is Chin Augmentation?

Depending on the type of chin augmentation, the procedure is performed under a local or general anesthetic with IV sedation or topical anesthetics used to keep you comfortable. Injectable fillers take the least time and are the least invasive. Fat injections take slightly more time but allow for more specific shaping of the chin and jaw and last longer. Both require only topical and local anesthetics.

Chin augmentation achieved with bone grafts to reshape the chin takes the longest and requires general anesthesia and/or IV sedation for patient comfort. With this procedure, there is usually a small incision under the chin as well as small incisions inside the mouth. These will be closed with tiny sutures, and the scars should be hidden inside the mouth and in the natural crease under the chin.

How is the Recovery from Chin Augmentation?

After a surgical chin augmentation, the chin will feel numb and sore for several weeks. Swelling may also be experienced but will subside. If fat injections or fillers are used, there will be some minor swelling and bruising that greatly diminishes within a few days. Most people take a couple of days off after injections to the facial area to allow swelling and bruising to subside. Depending on the type of injections, most last between six months and two years before repeat injections are necessary.

For chin implantation, there is a bit more recovery. There may be some bloody drainage from the mouth for the first couple of days if the surgery was performed through the mouth. To help minimize swelling, it is recommended that patients sleep with their head and back elevated. It typically takes 10 to 14 days for all swelling and bruising to diminish, which is about the amount of time for rest.

How Much Does Chin Augmentation Cost?

The cost of chin augmentation is different with each patient depending on the type of chin augmentation performed, the extent of the procedure and whether it is combined with other facial surgery procedures. During a consultation, Dr. Man goes over the costs associated with the procedure, as well as payment options and financing.
