Lasers have become one of plastic surgeons’ most exciting weapons in the fight against wrinkles and sun-damaged skin. During laser skin resurfacing, lasers vaporize the water in the top layers of skin, thus causing a constriction of the tissues. New cells form and collagen increases as the tissues heal, revealing a smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin.

One of the most popular laser skin resurfacing techniques uses a combination CO2 and Erbium lasers. By combing the two lasers, the surgeon has a very delicate and precise instrument for removing wrinkles and sun-damaged skin one layer at a time. This form of laser skin resurfacing removes lines and wrinkles, sun damage, brown spots, and a rough or “over-tanned” look. Laser skin resurfacing is a great way for the surgeon to target specific layers of skin, such as the top layer for fine lines or deeper layers for sun damage, deep wrinkles, crow’s feet, and lip lines.

After laser skin resurfacing, the skin will appear red, as if deeply sunburned. The redness lasts for anywhere from seven days to up to several months depending on your skin type and healing abilities. The skin will continue to improve as new cells, collagen and elastin increases. Risks associated with laser skin resurfacing include redness, hyper pigmentation, infection, scarring and burns. After laser skin resurfacing, patients are able to go out in the sun and resume regular activities in about 7-10 days. Regular sun screen use is recommended to preserve the laser skin resurfacing effects.

The laser skin resurfacing procedure is ideal for men and women alike and is good for fair or olive skins. Those with darker skins should be discussed with a surgeon before undergoing laser skin resurfacing. A private consultation is the best way to evaluate your skin characteristics to decide if laser skin resurfacing is right for you, or if another skin rejuvenation procedure, such as chemical peeling, would be best.
