Collagen is a natural protein substance found in the human body. It gives skin its strength, helps to form connective tissue, and binds water, keeping the skin hydrated. As we age, the number of collagen fibers in our skin decrease, causing the skin to loose its elasticity. Wrinkles form, the skin begins to sag, and the underlying tissues that keep our skin looking youthful and plump begin to break down: cheeks become sunken; smile lines and other wrinkles form around the mouth; and crows’ feet appear around the eyes.

Collagen injections are used to alleviate these skin issues. Filler materials such as collagen or fat (which, unlike collagen, is harvested from your own body) can be injected under the skin to fill wrinkles and give a smoother, fuller, more youthful-looking facial appearance. Other filler materials include Alloderm and Gortex, a thread-like material, can also be used as an alternative to collagen injections.

Prior to collagen injection treatment, the doctor will ask about your medical history and allergies. The collagen injections take only minutes in the doctor’s office and are done under local anesthetic. Collagen injections can be done alone or in conjunction with laser resurfacing, facelifts, or other procedures. Risks associated with collagen injections, though not common, include allergic reaction, infection, and skin irregularity. Collagen injections are not permanent and must be repeated to maintain results.
