Botox® Cosmetic

Allergan® is the only licensed, FDA approved manufacturer of BOTOX® for cosmetic purposes.

BOTOX® Cosmetic has become a very popular means of reducing certain facial wrinkles including frown lines of the forehead, crows feet around the eyes. Frown lines are the vertical lines caused by contraction of the muscles of the eyebrows. Injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic directly into the muscles of the eyebrows and forehead causes the muscles to relax, smoothing out the vertical lines.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a therapeutic muscle relaxer (neuro agent) derived from a type of botulinum toxin and acts directly on the nerves of the muscles preventing the muscles and nerves from receiving electrical impulses.

Is it safe?
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used safely for 20 years. Its side effects are minimal though complications such as allergic reactions or swelling can occur. Also, patients who are on antibiotics or other drugs should advise the doctor in advance as the drugs may act to increase or reduce the potency of the injections.

How is it administered?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is applied directly into the muscles of the eyebrows by injections using a very fine needle. The procedure is relatively painless and takes only several minutes.

How long does it last?
The results are not permanent, lasting from four to six months depending on the patient, and should be repeated.

DYSPORT “The Botox Twin”

Dysport often referred to as Botox’s twin, is an injectable form of botulinum toxin Type A similar to Botox and like Botox when it is injected in small amounts, it causes wrinkle producing muscles to relax.

Potential side effects of Dysport are similar to those associated with Botox including: numbness, swelling, bruising, or a burning sensation during injection. These side effects are temporary and should disappear. They can be assuaged by placing ice on the injection site before and after the procedure.

A key factor in deciding between Dysport or Botox is the cost. Dysport is approximately 1/3 the cost of Botox; however, it is also 1/3 the strength.  This means you will need about three times as many units of Dysport to get the same results as you would with one unit of Botox. As a result, the cost of Dysport treatment will most likely end up being similar to Botox.
