Men can look much younger and fitter with a neck lift to eliminate the excess skin and fat that accumulates around the neck. Daniel Man, M.D., a Florida board-certified plastic surgeon, performs neck lifts on men living in and around Boca Raton, FL, to give them a slimmer neckline and a more youthful appearance.

What is a Male Neck Lift?

When it comes to the neck, most people think of women wanting a thinner neckline that helps them look younger. With men, the neck is also an area of the body that is very noticeable and says a lot about their age. Whether they wear professional clothing with a buttoned shirt and tie or an opened sport shirt, the excess skin that creates the turkey neck is visible and can add years to their appearance. A neck lift for men makes it possible to remove excess skin around the neck and under the chin to create a slimmer neckline and profile. Not only does it take years off their appearance, it also makes them look thinner and fitter.

Benefits of a Neck Lift

Men’s necks typically show their age because of the wrinkles, sagging skin and turkey-like neck that sits over their shirts when buttoned up.

Neck lifts offer men the following benefits:

  • Less invasive than other cosmetic procedures
  • Creates a firmer appearance that acts as a base for the face
  • Reduces the appearance of a double chin
  • Restores a natural looking contour or silhouette of the neckline

How Do I Know if a Male Neck Lift is Right for Me?

If you have excess skin around your neck that droops or sags especially when wearing a tie a male neck lift may be right for you. If you have fine lines and wrinkles that are accentuated by excess skin, a neck lift can do wonders to create a smoother neckline.

How Involved is a Male Neck Lift?

The complexity of the surgery depends on the extent of the neck lift needed. Minimal contouring may require only liposuction to redefine a man’s neckline. This process works on men who have little or no loose skin and just extra fat deposits to remove to create a slimmer, more attractive neck and jawline.

For a full neck lift, the surgery requires more work. It is often done at the same time as a male facelift in which case, Dr. Man uses the technique from his natural facelift to access the upper part of the neck as well.

For those needing a traditional neck lift, the procedure involves making incisions under the chin and/or behind the ears depending on the procedure that has been chosen. The platysma muscle is tightened and sewn together to tighten the entire front of the neck in a manner like threading and tying shoelaces during a procedure called a corset platysmaplasty.

Excess skin and fat are carefully removed where indicated; the tissue and skin are repositioned, and absorbable sutures may be placed to hold everything in place during healing. The incisions are closed, and the wounds are bandaged. If necessary, drains are placed before the incisions are stitched. Scarring is minimized as much as possible by placing incisions inside or behind the ears, or under the chin in the natural creases.

Neck lift procedures typically take two to four hours depending on the amount of work being done. It is most often an outpatient procedure with patients staying to recover under the watchful eye of credentialed staff.

After the neck lift is complete, the incisions are surgically dressed to support and protect the neck. All vital signs are monitored to ensure patient safety and health until the anesthesia wears off.

After a Male Neck Lift

After surgery, you and your caregiver will receive detailed instructions about your postsurgical care, including information about:

  • Drains, if they have been placed
  • Normal symptoms you will experience
  • Potential signs of complications

A compression garment or wrap is immediately placed over the neck after surgery to support it and keep everything in place during the initial healing process. It should only be removed as directed. For the first few days, it is recommended that patients recline instead of lying down, and sleep with their heads elevated.

How is the Recovery from a Male Neck Lift?

Instructions are provided to patients after having a neck lift. It is important to follow those instructions to ensure proper healing and recovery.

Patients return to Dr. Man’s office for a follow-up visit about five days following surgery then again after two weeks so that he can check the healing progress and remove stitches. After that, there is another visit at the four-week mark then again at the three-month mark to check the results of the procedure.

How Much Does a Male Neck Lift Cost?

The cost of a neck lift for men varies depending on the extent of the area to be treated and whether it is done in conjunction with any other procedures. During a consultation with Dr. Man, he details the costs as well as payment options and financing.
