While otoplasty is typically performed on children between the ages of four and 14, men with large, protruding ears often want to correct this issue and gain a more masculine and attractive appearance. Daniel Man, M.D., a Florida board-certified plastic surgeon, performs male otoplasty for patients in Boca Raton, FL, and the surrounding communities who want less obtrusive ears.

What is Male Otoplasty?

When we think of large protruding ears, we think of how self-conscious kids can be because of ridicule and embarrassment; however, as we grow older, the poor self-image sticks with us. Men are just as insecure about overly large ears as anyone else.

Otoplasty is simply ear surgery that corrects ears that do not sit correctly on the sides of the head or are imbalanced or simply misshapen. It is done on children for the most part, but there are adults who never had their ears corrected and decide to in their adult years.

Benefits of Male Otoplasty

Otoplasty may be a long-lasting solution for protruding ears no matter the age of the patient. It offers men the following benefits:

  • Corrects the visual form of the ears
  • Resizes and reshapes the ears to be in proportion to the rest of the face and head
  • Boosts self-confidence that was low due to perpetual teasing
  • Easy recovery

Is Otoplasty for Men Right for Me?

If you are the least bit self-conscious about the size, shape or position of your ears, then otoplasty is right for you. There is no reason for you to suffer from the ridicule of name calling and a lack of self-esteem because of your ears.

How Involved is Male Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that provides male patients long-lasting results that boosts self-esteem and promotes confidence. This procedure revises a variety of issues that men who never had their ears corrected experience. Men who suffer from defects in their ear structure caused by injury or genetics may also benefit from ear surgery.

Otoplasty is performed under local sedation and takes roughly two to three hours. Dr. Man removes the skin and cartilage from the back of the ear to pull the ears into position then sutures them into their new, correct position. The sutures are placed behind the ear and over the repaired cartilage to hide scars. After a week or rest and healing, patients may return work.

Preparing for Male Otoplasty

As with any cosmetic procedure, men receiving ear surgery get detailed preoperative instructions and are typically asked to do the following:

  • Get medical clearance from their family physician
  • Stop smoking six weeks before your surgery
  • Stop taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs: Advil, Motrin, Aleve) and vitamins/homeopathic)
  • Start hydrating several days before the surgery
  • Have someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for the first 24-48 hours

After Male Otoplasty

Once complete, patients may rest in the recovery area until the anesthesia has worn off. Dr. Man wraps the ears and head with a compression bandage to hold the ears in place during the initial healing process and to provide support and prevent any injuries to the area. After about three days, he replaces the bandages with lighter weight ones.

How is the Recovery from Otoplasty for Men?

The entire recovery process takes a month or so to heal although you may return to work after one week. Strenuous or vigorous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for a few weeks.

How Much Does Male Otoplasty Cost?

Ear surgery is different for each patient since each patient has different needs and objectives for their desired looks. Because of this, the cost varies as well. During a consultation, Dr. Man goes over the costs of the procedure in addition to the financing and payment options.
