Light Skin Peels
Light to Medium Face and Skin Peels
Light face peels work to freshen and exfoliate the skin by removing dead cells and promoting new cell growth. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) peels are the choice for most surgeons recommending a light face peel. The most common types of AHAs are made from glycolic acid, which is found in sugar cane; lactic acid, the found in sour milk; citric acid, found in fruit; tartaric acid, found in grapes; Retin-A, short for retinoic acid, derived from Vitamin A; and salicylic acid, found in aspirin. These are commercially available over the counter in mild concentrations in a wide range of cosmetic products. Physicians offer stronger concentrations in the form of light face peels, which usually produce better results.
Applied to the surface of the skin, face peels loosen the glue that binds dead cells, providing rapid exfoliation. These face peels are best used under a doctor’s guidance, as they can make the skin photosensitive and result in redness and skin irritation. Face peels provide an excellent skin care regimen to keep the skin looking refreshed.
While light face peels will help the skin look refreshed and smoother, they do little to remove deeper lines and sun damage. For this a deeper face peel is required.
Medium to Deep Face and Skin Peels
A medium, or tricholracetic acid (TCA), face peel provides another option for skin care, but is a more extensive treatment. The TCA face peel goes deeper than the light face peels and will make the skin look tighter and smoother, giving a fresher looking appearance. The TCA face peel can be applied to the whole face, hands, arms, or to specific areas and takes about 30 minutes. Medium face peels require a shorter recovery time that the deeper phenol face peel and usually must be repeated to maintain results.
For even deeper lines a phenol, or Skin Rejuvenation Peel (SRP), may be the best choice. An SRP it is the deepest face peel available and produces the most dramatic results, which can last for several years.
A consultation with the doctor and an examination of your skin type will help to determine which type of skin peel is right for you.
