Procedure: Lip Lifts / Augmentation Purpose: To increase the volume and contour of the lips. Surgery: Lip lift and plumping with fat, collagen injections, alloderm graft. Anesthesia: Local or I.V. sedation. Where: Outpatient surgery, or overnight stay. Recovery: Swelling, bruising. Risks: Allergic reaction, infection.
In our youth our lips are plump and full. As we age, they lose their fullness. The upper lip, in particular, appears thin and the distance from the tip of the nose to the upper lip lengthens as the lips drop "down" giving a frown-like appearance. The vermilion border, also called the "cupid's bow," flattens out and becomes thin. A lip lift or lip augmentation will increase the volume and fullness of the lips and give a more attractive contour and natural pout as in our youth. Treatment may require a surgical lip lift in order to shorten the area between the nose and upper lip, and injections of filler materials such as collagen, fat, AlloDerm, or Gortex, a thread like material, which can be implanted into the skin to give the soft lip tissue fullness and support. New filters include Restylane & Perlane. These are not currently FDA approved, however, it is used in 50 countries! The procedure is performed in the doctor's office under local or I.V. sedation. After treatment there will be swelling and bruising. In the case of incisions, sutures are removed after several days. As in all surgery, there are risks including allergic reaction or infection.
