Full, round cheeks help to fill out the face and keep us young looking. As we age, the fat pads that make up the cheeks loose their plumpness, becoming flat, often falling and even disappearing. There are several ways the surgeon can fill out the cheeks to give more fullness and definition to the face. This is often done in conjunction with a facelift or other procedure(s) using fat injections to plump up the depressed areas. It can also be done alone. In some cases an implant may be inserted. This requires the surgeon to make a small incision inside the mouth. Next a pocket is created over the cheekbone where the implant will be placed. The entry area is then closed with dissolving tissues. After surgery the cheeks will be stiff and numb for several days. Chewing may be uncomfortable and antibiotics will be prescribed. Surgery lasts roughly one hour and is performed under local sedation in the doctor's office.
